The very talented Nigerian rapper, Jude Abaga, popularly known as M.I Abaga, has raised concerns over the questionable sources of funding that sustain a significant segment of the country’s music industry.
Speaking during an appearance on the So Nigerian podcast, the award-winning lyricist lamented that a substantial share of financial support for emerging artistes is linked to proceeds from internet fraud and foreign sponsorships.
He described the trend as a disturbing reflection on Nigeria’s socio-economic climate, stressing that a vibrant creative sector should not depend on illicit wealth or overseas funding.
M.I urged Nigerians and established investors to take a more active role in supporting homegrown musical talents, noting that many young artistes currently rely on the backing of peers rather than reputable industry stakeholders.
“It’s an indictment on our country that we have such talented musicians, yet the major funding for the industry comes from the West and the fraud industry. It shows that something is wrong. Hopefully, we can do better,” the rapper remarked.
