Apparently, Cobham graduate Reece James has officially been confirmed as Chelsea Football Club’s new captain.
However, Reece James is delighted to be named as Chelsea’s new captain and reflects on how far he’s come in his time at the club so far.
The 23-year-old replaces former Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta, who left the west London side earlier this summer for Atletico Madrid.
James has now been selected by head coach Mauricio Pochettino after being chosen to wear the armband alongside Thiago Silva during Chelsea’s pre-season tour across the United States.
He said: “I’m so happy to take on the role and responsibility. I know I’ve got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.
“I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it’s a great feeling for me and my family.”
Also, Mauricio Pochettino added that James “leads by example” and that he will “take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas”. The 51-year-old confirmed earlier in July that the England international was in contention to be named as the new Chelsea captain.
Meanwhile, Co-sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart said: ‘Reece’s connection with Chelsea has been forged over 17 years. He understands the traditions of the club and the responsibilities that come with being captain.
